What Causes Transmission Slipping?

There’s no such thing as a minor transmission problem. That’s because no transmission problems go away on their own, but instead get worse over time and lead to more damage and require more expensive repairs. That’s why you should visit an auto repair shop in Tucson at the first sign of transmission trouble, regardless of how minor the problem may seem. For example, a slipping transmission may seem like a small issue that does not greatly affect your vehicle’s performance, but it is a definite indication that something isn’t right with your transmission and worse problems may be just around the corner. Some of the leading causes of transmission slipping include:

Worn Out Clutch

For manual transmissions, clutch problems are the culprit behind slipping in an overwhelming majority of the cases. Clutches wear out over time, and transmission slipping is typically one of the first signs that your clutch needs to be replaced. Driving on worn or burnt out clutches can cause greater damage in the long run, so bring your car in for repair so you can have the clutch replaced if it is found to the culprit behind your transmission slipping.

Low Fluid Levels

The other leading cause of slippage in both automatic and manual transmissions is low fluid levels. If you are experiencing transmission slipping, check the transmission fluid level . Low fluid can be an indication of a leak somewhere in the transmission system that will need to be repaired. When checking the fluid level, also make note of the condition of the fluid. If the fluid is very dark or smells burnt, visit a shop for a transmission flush to see if that helps with the slippage issues.

Faulty Solenoid

It’s also possible that the slippage you are experiencing could be the result of a problem with the solenoid, an electrohydraulic valve that controls the flow of fluid throughout the transmission. A fault in the solenoid can cause the wrong amounts of fluids to be dispersed inside the transmission, which can result in slipping in some cases.
