While some people plan to sell their vehicle in the near future, there are others that intend on driving their current ride for many years to come. If you want your vehicle to remain in tip-top running condition, it needs to be properly maintained on a regular basis. Here are some hints for helping your car stay healthy.

Regular Oil Changes
The overall longevity of your car’s engine is heavily dependant upon the frequency of oil changes. Getting your oil changed every 3000 miles will certainly help to prevent premature engine failure. As your engine begins to rack up the miles, the motor oil’s additives gradually begin to break down. This means that internal parts of the engine are no longer adequately protected.

Check the Transmission Fluid
If the level of the transmission fluid is low, this is a tell-tale sign that there is a leak. A low level of transmission fluid dramatically compromises the health of the transmission. In some instances, a lack of transmission fluid could cause thousands of dollars in damage to the unit. Transmission fluid that exhibits a burned appearance means that the transmission has overheated.

Rotate Your Tires
Although rotating the tires is a relatively simple task, many car owners avoid doing it. Rotating the tires will extend the overall tire life by thousands of miles. Rotating the tires also provides the perfect opportunity to inspect each tire for irregular tread wear patterns. Odd tread wear could indicate that your vehicle is due for a wheel alignment or a new set of shock absorbers.

Avoid Excessive Idling
Many car owners allow their vehicle to idle for several minutes upon first cranking it in the morning. Not only does this practice wastes fuel, but it also puts extra stress on the engine. Modern fuel-injected vehicles are designed to be driven after a minimal warm-up period of no longer than one minute.
