“Check engine” light on? If so, you’re probably scratching your head wondering what could possibly be the problem. The fact of the matter is there are numerous reasons why your vehicle’s engine warning light might be on. The best way to know for sure what’s caused the check engine light is to visit your local automotive repair shop in Tucson and have a professional technician perform an advanced computer diagnostic scan. There are literally hundreds of different reasons why the check engine light may come on, but here are four of the most common:

Gas Cap is Loose or Damaged

Believe it or not, one of the most common reasons for a check engine light is a loose, damaged, or missing gas cap. If your gas cap is damaged or missing, replace it and see if that solves the check engine warning. It’s also a good idea to replace damaged or missing gas caps since you can lose fuel through evaporation without a tight seal.

Dirty Spark Plugs or Plug Wires

If you are experiencing reduced power, lower fuel economy, and other noticeable performance issues while your check engine light is on, the problem might be dirty or worn out spark plugs and/or plug wires. If you don’t know how to check or replace spark plugs and plug wires, bring your vehicle to an automotive repair shop for this service.

Bad Sensors

There are two primary sensors that can cause the check engine light to come on when they fail. The mass airflow sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine, and the oxygen sensor measures the amount of unburned oxygen in the car’s exhaust system. A computer diagnostic scan is needed to determine whether a faulty sensor is the cause of the problem.
